Thaipusam is an important Hindu festival that is celebrated in Malaysia
by the Tamil community. The Batu Caves, north of Kuala Lumpur, is a
focal point for many of the Thaipusam activities.
Some of the devotees engage in the piercing of the flesh which can
involve poking skewers through the skin, tongue or cheeks.
